Common Questions

Q: It seems like all of a sudden my skin is just not looking as good as it used to. What can I do?

A: Efforts to maximize and maintain your skin health is an ongoing process that is accomplished by daily use of skin care products designed to address the use of your skin’s unique needs and can be enhanced by the use of in-office skin treatments. It’s never too late to start taking care of your skin and see the wonderful results!

Q: What are alpha hydroxy acids and what do they actually do?

A: Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are “naturally occurring” acids. AHAs work to break down dead skin cells and speed up exfoliation. As a result, new, healthy skin cells are produced faster enabling you to have a radiant, youthful appearance. There are many different kinds of AHAs and they come in different strengths. AHAs that you obtain through a physician tend to be stronger and have higher concentrations. Also important, is the availability of educated staff, trained in the proper instruction and use of AHAs in a managed and supervised skin care program.

Q: What is hyperpigmentation?

A: Hyperpigmentation refers to patchy areas of brown spots in the skin. Hyperpigmentation is a common problem for those who have had excessive sun exposure, are taking synthetic hormones or are under going hormonal changes such as pregnancy. Fortunately, new strides have been made in the development of pigment control skin products and skin peels that can effectively diminish the appearance of hyperpigmentation to give the skin a much more even tone and youthful appearance.

Q: What is meant by a physician based skin maintenance program?

A: A physician based skin maintenance program is a program customized to focus on correcting your specific skin problems and stimulating good skin health. Skin maintenance programs can be different for different people, it depends on the patient’s specific skin problem, skin type, goals and last, but not least, motivation. Usually, a skin maintenance program will involve 1) medical skin products to use at home and 2) in-office superficial skin peels for maintaining exfoliation and replenishing nutrients and vitamins to the skin. These superficial in-office skin peels are usually repeated once a month for the best maintenance and may change as your skin changes. Patients find this to be very simple and easy and the rewarding changes in their skin make them very motivated to continue.

Q: Is it expensive to begin a physician grade skin care program?

A: Many patients are amazed to find physician grade skin care products are similar in cost to many advertised department store products.

Q: I have blotchy, uneven skin. What is the best peel for me?

A: A PCA peel is a treatment performed in the office that has a special combination of natural acids and color correctors that work together to lighten and brighten the skin. Frequently with sun damage and age, skin can develop a buildup of brown color that leaves a very dull, blotchy appearance. The PCA peel stimulates cell turnover in the skin, which has a rejuvenating effect and helps reverse the effect of environmental damage. It also suppresses pigment production which improves overall skin tone. The effects of this treatment combined with ongoing skin care at home can make a wonderful improvement in your appearance!

Q: I am very unhappy with the texture of my skin. I have a lot of sun damage and it's left me with crepy skin around my eyes and many fine cross hatching wrinkles all over my face. What would be the best treatment for this?

A: To treat severe sun damage and improve texture of wrinkles many will choose to have a deeper chemical peel. Unlike the more superficial skin peels, you will have to take a little time off to heal. But like all skin treatments, there is no substitute for a good skin maintenance program. You will then continue to improve and maintain your smoother skin.

Q: Why would someone have a deeper chemical peel instead of a CO2 laser treatment for wrinkles?

A: It can be much easier on the patient to have a full face chemical peel than a full face CO2 treatment. With chemical peels you heal faster and with much less pinkness of the skin, but you still enjoy the benefits of fresh rejuvenated skin.

Q: I've tried using Retin A in the past to correct sun damage and facial wrinkles, but it left my face red, flaky and irritated. Are there any alternatives?

A: Retin A, or Renova, is an excellent product aimed at stimulating collagen production, therefore reducing wrinkles. Unfortunately, many people cannot tolerate Retin A due to its irritating effects. Vitamin C is the natural alternative to Retin A. Its antioxidant effects help neutralize the damaging effects of our environment. Concentrated Vitamin C actually stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which strengthens the skin. It’s a great way to reduce and prevent wrinkles and make your skin “shine like the sun!”

Q: What is an Oxygenating Peel?

A: An Oxygenating Peel is an excellent treatment for skin that has been damaged by smoking, aging, environmental toxins and sun exposure, all of which produce free radicals which damage your skin. The Oxygenating Peel is an excellent antioxidant treatment that stimulates blood flow and loads the skin with intensely rich oxygen carrying ability to boost the skin’s natural health. The Oxygenating Peel is most often combined with other skin peels. Many choose to have an Oxygenating Peel before a special event because it leaves your skin with a rosy, youthful glow.

Q: I have very dry skin. Even with moisturizers my skin is still dry and flaky and my makeup only makes this look worse. Is there anything that can help?

A: Yes. People with dry skin have a twofold problem; getting the dead skin off and getting enough hydration into the skin. You must exfoliate or remove the dead cells first, or else no moisturizer will seem to work, because you cannot hydrate dead skin. There are medical grade nonabrasive exfoliants you can use at home. There are also in-office skin peels that can be very beneficial for people with dry skin. For example, a Micropeel is an exfoliating treatment that removes surface dead skin cells and facial hair giving you baby soft skin that says, “Wow!” You look terrific the same day, with no healing time. Your makeup will glide on and your skin feels silky smooth!

Q: I used to occasionally get freckles in the summer, but now I'm noticing the brown spots stay year-round and are getting larger and darker. When I look at myself in the mirror, I really notice the brown spots now. Is there anything I can do?

A: Yes. First you need to start protecting your face from the sun using sunscreen. There are medical skin products that you can use at home and in-office superficial chemical peels that will accelerate the correction of your skin tone with no healing time. They work to even the color of your skin and decrease the brown, blotchy appearance.

Q: I've heard of a Pumpkin Peel. What is it?

A: A Pumpkin Peel is specially formulated to infuse your skin with enzymes and nutrients that have tremendous antioxidant effects. Pumpkin is an excellent source of vitamins and nutrients essential to your skin needs. A Pumpkin Peel gives your skin natural health and a beautiful glow!

Q: I want my face to look its best, but I love the look of tanned skin. Should I continue to tan?

A: Tanning will only accelerate the aging process and at some point you will probably regret your tanning past. Sun tanned skin tends to look dehydrated and frequently over the years, the skin builds up a brown color which only accentuates the signs of aging. Making a decision to protect your skin from the sun, along with a good skin care program, can help restore your skin’s health. It is possible with the use of many self-tanning creams and bronzing powders to have the look of tanned skin without experiencing the damaging effects of tanning beds or natural sun rays. Your face may even look better with self-tanners because the skin appears hydrated, healthy and you can get radiant color.

Q: I have always loved to tan in the sun. I've noticed the older I get, the more brown spots I seem to have. These brown spots also seem to be getting bigger, darker and give me a blotchy appearance. Is there anything I can do to halt the brown spots?

A: Yes. There are a variety of products and in-office skin treatments that work to help even the skin tone. Pigment products used in accordance with in-office skin tone evening treatments can noticeably improve hyperpigmentation, leaving your skin much more uniform and clear.

Q: How long is the healing time for a skin peel?

A: It depends on what type of skin peel you choose to have. Deeper chemical peels require on average 7 days of healing time and you could also expect to have pinkness to your skin. For the more superficial skin peels, there is no healing time and minimal to no pinkness. If you choose, you can put makeup on right away, but you don’t need to because your skin looks fresh and beautiful immediately!

Q: I have oily skin. I wash it all the time and it just stays oily. The problem gets even worse in the summer. What can I do?

A: People with oily skin frequently have a combination problem. In trying to control oiliness, many people can be overzealous with washing. This can actually increase oil production and dry out the surface skin. To begin with, you should not regularly wash your face more than twice a day. If excessive oil is produced between the washings, it’s better to blot of the oil with tissue. You also need to adequately exfoliate and remove the dry surface layer which avoids clogged pores and possible breakouts. Many people with oily skin do not understand the importance of hydrating the skin. Oil control products, along with oil-free hydrators, can be a valuable solution for oily skin.

Q: I've been a sun worshipper for many years. I can now see the damage it has caused to my skin, especially with the brown, uneven color. I now protect my skin from the sun, but is there anything I can do to help reverse the effects of the sun damage?

A: Yes. Sun damage is usually seen as brown, blotchy dull skin that has a multitude of fine lines or cross hatching in the skin, especially around the eyes. This can be minimized by dedicated use of skin products that are formulated to both even out skin pigmentation and promote exfoliation, or removal of the thick, built-up layer of dead skin. In-office skin treatments can also be performed to accelerate the process. It took years for the damaging effects of the sun to become apparent, but an ongoing skin care program aimed at correcting the damage and then maintaining your rejuvenated and radiant skin can easily be accomplished!

Q: What is the "lunch time peel?" I heard you look terrific after and can go right back to work.

A: A Micropeel is a quick, safe in-office skin treatment that has tremendous appeal and takes only 30 minutes to do! A Micropeel exfoliates your skin by removing surface dead skin cells and facial hair. Words can’t describe how good your skin feels and the smooth shine leaves the patients saying, “Wow!”
